Westmead Children’s Hospital, food in Maroubra and Randwick and two medical centers in Parkes, in the center west of the state, were among the places identified as visited by cases confirmed in March.
In February, a confirmed case visited 16 offices throughout the city, including the crowded construction of Queen Victoria in the CBD, while they may have been contagious.
Two doses of the MMR vaccine are 99 % effective against measles, which can spread from a person to 10 or 15 unvaccinated individuals.
Julie Leask, the professor of the vaccinations of the University of Sydney, said that the pandemic has influenced the vaccination services in the countries that have current outbreaks of measles.
“Many services were closed: people were also afraid to go to those services,” he said.
Of the 17 cases recorded this year, three were in children under the age of four and four cases were less than 14 years old. The largest percentage of cases was in young adults aged 20 to 24.
The infectious diseases of the network for the children’s hospital of Sydney Phillip Britton said that children traveling abroad under the age of 12 months, when a child generally receives their first MMR vaccine, could get an initial vaccine at six months.
“People in Australia have become compliant for measles, but measles is a terrible disease,” he said.
“It is a disease that makes children end up in the hospital. It is a disease that makes children have complications such as pneumonia and even things such as encephalitis or brain inflammation … it can continue to cause problems for children for years after their acute infection.”
