Air travel could become too expensive for most of us, warns Qantas boss

Airlines can be able to absorb some of SAF costs, with relatively modest increases in ticket prices following strong fluctuations in the oil price.

However, Hudson from Qantas warned that the flight could become “so expensive that it is something for the privileged”. While price increases may be necessary, “there is a big difference between five times and 1.5 times,” he said, indicating uncertainty about fuel costs. Qantas has a joint venture with Airbus on the SAF production.
SAF currently costs three or five times more than kerosene, but is seen as the only realistic way to achieve the goal of the aeronautical industry of clear carbon emissions by 2050.
The high prices and low production volumes indicate that the fuel of last year has constituted less than 1 % of the fuel consumption at the sector level.
However, governments around the world are betting on a strong increase in the production and use of fuel to achieve zero net objectives. SAF, which is more commonly derived from used cooking oil from Asia, can reduce the so -called CO2 emissions of the life cycle by about 80 % compared to the traditional jet fuel.
Faury has admitted that the aviation industry may have difficulty achieving its goal of reaching Net Zero by 2050, saying that “perhaps it will take a little more time”.

He handed over the warning while Airbus has revealed a project for a new generation of close -up aircraft capable of running to 100 % SAF.
The current plans for the aircraft, to be introduced some time after 2035, present composite wings which are much longer and closer than the existing models. The replaced wings create more lifting, reduce resistance and reduction of fuel. However, their length means that wings must bend to use existing airport gates.
Airbus also confirmed that he had set aside studies for a motor -with motor plane that burned hydrogen instead of kerosene.
Tuesday separately, Qantas confirmed that he planned to start managing direct flights from Sydney to New York and London by 2027. Ultra-Long-Houl flights will last up to 19 hours and will rely on a new generation of Airbus plane, the A350-1000, to be delivered at the end of next year.
