“I am absolutely furious that terrorist prisoners, who represent such a significant risk for national security, are authorized the same freedoms and privileges of prisoners in a normal position,” said Fairhurst. “We should not allow prisoners in the separation centers to access the cooking facilities, so they have resources and tools that can inflict violence to staff.

“There is only one way to reduce the risk and prevent this from happening again and to reduce the risk, you have to stop the access of prisoners to the kitchens, because we are worried about the copy accidents. They receive food in prison, they receive three meals a day. Why do they have to cook?”

Fairhurst said that the accident highlighted the dangerous realities of being a prison officer and argued that further investments from the treasure were needed to improve the conditions for prison staff.

“This only highlights how violent our work is, that your life is in line every single round – every time you go on duty you are subject to threats, abuse and violence, every single day, and we are honest, we do not have the adequate protection in place,” he said.

He said that the union was asking for an urgent meeting with the secretary of justice, Shabana Mahmood, “to discuss what happened and put on our case to issue prison officers on stabbing jackets on the front line”.

He said that waiting for the review, access to prison kitchens “should be removed immediately and should never be allowed”.

Fairhurst also said that the promised review of the accident should be made independently.

“If they are seriously intent on improving the conditions for staff and the tightening of violence, they will commission this independent review,” he said. “We don’t want to be held internally, we want an independent expert on terrorism to look at what went wrong and formini recommendations.”

The Moj has not yet said whoever performs the review or if the cooking structures for prisoners will be suspended in the meantime.

A Moj spokesman said: “Our thoughts remain with the two prison officers still in the hospital while recovering. There will be a complete review on how this attack has been able to happen, together with the separate police investigation. The government will do everything you need to protect our laborious staff.”

Responding to the assault, Mahmood Written in X Saturday evening: “I am upset by the attack of three brave officials of Hmp Frankland today. My thoughts are with them and their families.

“The police are now investigating. I will push for the strongest punishment possible. Violence against our staff will never be tolerated.”
