Brazil was in conflict at the beginning of 2024. They had appointed the interim coach of Ramon Menezes inexperienced in the wake of the 2022 World Cup, then he had turned to another temporary solution to Diniz, making all the time to get to Ancelotti to arrive and start a new era before the America Copa last summer. The prevailing impression – strengthened by the disastrous performance against Argentina this week – was the drift of a team, occasionally saved from individual brilliance but basically anywhere near the required level.
Brazil’s problems are much deeper than the coach’s head. For now, the question is whether Dorival’s dismissal will lead to a short -term rebound. Brazil would certainly benefit from a more coherent tactical plan, a greater sense of purpose, even a little more personality. Ancelotti would seem the main candidate again. The weather, however, is short: the World Cup is just 15 months after.
