British & Irish Lions 2025: Richard Wigglesworth is ready to join the coaching staff for Australia Tour


The senior coach of England Richard Wigglesworth will join the British and Irish Lions coaching staff for this summer tour in Australia.

The head of the Lions Andy Farrell recruited the former Misy of England, 41, as part of a coaching group influenced by Ireland.

The interim coach of Ireland Simon Easterby should also join the Farrell team, while Irish attack coach Andrew Goodman and Scrum specialist John Fogarty are in consideration.

Core Lions coaching team will be confirmed on Wednesday.

Farrell has already appointed the head of the strength and conditioning of Ireland Aled Walters and the former director of the performance of Ireland David Nucifora – now in a similar role with Scotland – to key roles.

Initially it seemed that no engineer in England would be involved below, despite a strong goal for the six nations and a second place behind France.

After the victory of the last day over Wales in Cardiff, the head of England Steve Borthwick said he had not received any approach from Lions for any of his assistants.

However, it is understood that Farrell contacted Borthwick in the week following the six nations to investigate the availability of Wigglesworth.

England began their campaign of the six nations with defeat against Ireland in Dublin before two narrow victories on France and Scotland.

Bourthwick’s team then overwhelmed Italy and directed Wales, with Farrell eager to draw on the methods that contributed to delivering the best England championship in five years.

For Wigglesworth, a Lions role would be the last step in a thriving coaching career.

The winner of the premiership of the seven times took on a coaching role with Leicester while still playing, before Walking at Borthwick in England as head coach of the tigers At the end of 2022.

Wigglesworth then joined the Borthwick England staff the following summer and was Promoted in England senior coach in October 2024.

After confirming his coaching group on Wednesday, Farrell will appoint his team on Thursday 8 May, with the Lions who face Argentina in Dublin on Friday 20 June.

The team then goes to Australia for five heating games before the first of three tests against the Wallabies on Saturday 19 July in Brisbane. An midweek match precedes the second test in Melbourne on July 26, with the third in Sydney on August 2nd.
