British Steel launch staff of the race to keep the explosions of Scunthorpe
The government took control of the company on Saturday, inheriting a precarious situation. The immediate challenge is to protect essential raw materials, including coal and iron mineral, to maintain scarthorpe systems operational.
Failure to comply with these materials will lead to the cooling of ovens, potentially causing irreparable damage and ending the steel in the city of Lincolnshire.
Sunday, commercial secretary Jonathan Reynolds He was unable to ensure that this would not happen, but said that the taking of control of the plant had given the government “a possibility” to save him.
Dozens of companies, including Tata and Rainham Steel, gathered to help British Steel with managerial support offers and raw materials following the acquisition of the government.
Reynolds said: “When I said Steelmaking has a future in the United Kingdom, I understood it.
“That’s why we have passed these new powers to save the British steel in Scunthorpe, and this is why my team is already working on the ground to make the work and furnaces work to burn.”
The need to protect the raw materials and prevent the cooling of the Altiforni was the main reason why the government recalled Parliament on Saturday to approve the emergency legislation to keep the site open.
Jingye, British Steel’s Chinese owners, not only had stopped ordering raw materials, but had started selling existing supplies, triggering the concerns that the plant could close in a few days.
Officials of the Department for Companies and Commerce (DBT), together with the British staff Steel, will spend on Monday working to bring materials nearby on the site, in addition to ensuring that the staff continue to be paid, the department said.
Support offers from other companies also mean that British Steel is re -evaluating its options.
This perhaps includes Jingye’s decision to temporarily take one of the Blast Furnaces already on Monday using a “tap Salamander”, a procedure that is said to be dangerous.
The ministers remain hopes that a private investor can be found for British steel, with the cost of modernization of the Sciarthorpe system which should be unbeaten in billions of pounds.
But during the weekend, Reynolds admitted that complete nationalization remained the most likely short -term option.
He said: “The steel is vital for our national security and our ambitious plans for the housing, infrastructure and manufacturing sectors in the United Kingdom.
“We will start on a long-term plan to co-investigate with the private sector to ensure that steel in the United Kingdom has a bright and sustainable future.”
However, the conservatives accused the government of reciting “too late” and of implementing a “bankrupt nationalization” after ignoring the warnings on the risk for British steel.
Shadow Commercial Secretary Andrew Griffith He said: “The Labor government landed in a steel crisis entirely from their pressure. They made wrong decisions and let the unions death their actions”.
