Charleston Open: Jessica Pegula beats Sofia Kenin in two sets


The world number four Jessica Pegula mounted a superb second set of second set to beat Sofia Kenin 6-3 7-5 and get her first Clay Court title at the Charleston Open.

In what was the first All-American final at the tournament since 1990, the 31-year-old took the command, breaking Kenin in the opening match on his way to claim the first set.

But the 2020 Kenin Australian open champion, 26, reacted to lead the second set 5-1 and was ready to bring the game to a decision maker.

However, Top Seed Peguula saved three sets and then won six games in a row to seal the victory against an opponent 40 seats under her in the world charts.

The success, which came a week after her final defeat of Miami in Aryna Sabalenka, was the eighth title of Peguula’s career and the second year after the victory at Austin last month.
