County Championship: Surrey launched for 253 from the Hampshire
The Surrey Dom Sbley Open brought his club for the sixth time in his career and made a century unbeaten to save the champions against Hampshire on the first day of their conteity championship match at Oval.
The 29 -year -old was unbeaten out of 100 when Surrey was launched for 253 after being inserted.
The Hampshire lost Middleton Flemcha due to a nice ball from Dan Worrall who made a bite to hit the middle in the second of their response, but Mark Stoneman and Nick Gubbins took them to 55-1 from 16 over to Stumps, 198 behind.
The Hampshire has lost the last four games at the Oval and did not win there for 17 years, but their attack justified the decision of the Ben Brown skipper’s decision to launch first on a typical oval field that started with a good grass coverage.
Their puppies shared eight wickets with Brad Wheal (4-65) the choice of their attack, but they could not remove Sibley. He brought his club five times for the former Warwickshire of County and only Geoff Boycott (eight) has now beaten an inning completed in the County Championship several times by the Second World War.
Sibley offered a strong possibility out of 54 which was posed by Toby Albert with a short leg, but for the rest it accumulated with the typical patience and determination. There was some assistance during the day for the Hampshire puppies, but they were also helped by a poor selection of shots. Surrey will feel that their total was below the conditions.
Sibley lost her opening partner Rory Burns in the second when Wheal found the movement of the stitching just enough and Surrey’s captain marked the second brief. Kyle Abbott then collected Ollie Pope (14) who marked a delivery that could first ignore slip.
The most aggressive game of the day came from Jamie Smith, whose 39 balls of 35 balls included seven four, three of which were launched in one by the New Zealand Brett Hampon.
Smith had helped Sabley to take the score at 96 when she cut the third man and Sonny Baker had spoken of the ball just inside the border rope before completing the capture. The Hampshire confirmed that they had been their morning in the last one before lunch when Ben Fokes (14) played at Abbott.
Wheal got enough movement to defeat Dan Lawrence’s loose disc and leave Surrey 129-5, but Sibley found a useful ally in Ryan Patel for an absorbent afternoon session. They added 68 in 29 over for the sixth WICKET before Patel had sparked a shot out of Hampon and made an easy capture in the middle of the penultimate before tea.
In a rare show of Sabley attacks, Liam Dawson wiped out calmly on the big long on the border, but on the other side Jordan Clark, Matthew Fisher and Kemar Roach fell cheap after tea and when the last man Dan Worrall came out of Sesibley was still short of 15 races beyond his century.
Six others, this time outside Wheal on Square -gui, brought him in the 90s and with World, who made two fifties in his career, looking at the other hand on the other side Sesibley reached the 23rd hundred of his career duly before taking the consensus of a crowd of 5,639.
He beat only a shy of six and a half hours, faced 217 balls and hit nine four when he became the first Surrey batter from Burns in 2017-even against Hampshire-to bring his club.
