“I think it is obvious to say that Australia is a very welcoming, very open country,” he said. “I mean, everyone is welcome there. And as I said, Tennis Australia, they also took this step forward for me.

“We have, together, we worked through this process and things like that. And of course, without their support and initiative, I don’t think it would be possible. So I’m really grateful to them. Everything happened quite quickly and I’m really happy.”

Kasatkina, who was classified as much as the world n. 8, he said that playing the Australian Open for the first time as a citizen next year would be particularly special.

“The first game will be special,” said Kasatkina. “And come to Australia every year, seeing how much support the players from Australia get there – honestly, I have never experienced something like this in my life.
