The 2025 world championship is the last important international tournament before the 2026 Milan Olympics, making the main opportunities for the teams to evaluate the status of their lists.
Canada entered the tournament as a reigning champion after beating the US team in an exciting match for 6-5 extraordinary at the worlds of last year in Utica, NY, the two countries have faced gold at 22 of 23 women’s world championships since 1990, when the IIHF sanctioned the event for the first time.
No nation has more than the 13 gold medals of Canada. The United States have won 10 times. Finland is the only other country to play a gold medal match, but has lost against the USA 2-1 team in a shooting.
The 10 -team tournament is divided into two groups at several levels for the preliminary rounds. The A group includes the first five teams of the previous tournament; Group B is the next three classified teams, in addition to the two nations that obtain promotion from the world championships of the I Inferiore division. Every year, the two lower teams of the tournament are relegated to Division I. This year, Norway and Hungary-the first two teams of the worlds of division I of 2024-they replaced China and Denmark, the two lower teams of the high-level tournament last year.
