Taxes, cost of living in the minds of the voters

Hi, I am a journalist based in Toronto who shows live on CBC News Network. I will bounce for the key races of the Ontario to listen to the voters directly.

Today I was in Oakville, in Ontario, a city that had its boundaries redesigned for these elections. An voter told me that immigration is his main number: he thinks he has been too much in recent years (he has immigrated to Canada more than 40 years ago).

Another common theme concerned the cost of living. A young mother who was having dinner with her baby on a seat next to her said she wants to be able to buy a house.

The crime was also in the mind of the people I chatted with. Break-in and car thefts are rampant, they told me.

I met a young man named Chris Kovach, who works in the nearby Ford Auto plant together with his father. The rates are in the minds of the workers there, he said. The economy and taxes are its main problem.

“Do everything you need to lower taxes. I have no problem paying my right share of taxes, but I have to start seeing a performance to be happy for the fact that I am paying all the taxes I am,” he said.

The owner of the Peter Giannopolous restaurant declared that he would like to hear from the leaders of the party on how the owners of small businesses would support. Food costs are increasing, but is trying to keep its prices low for its faithful customers, while earning to live and paying the bills.

“Prices are going crazy. Someone must intervene and say it’s enough,” he said.
