In the stands, Patel e Gretzky celebrated.

“Congratulations to the Great One Wayne Gretzky and huge stage objects at number 8 @Ovi8,” Patel said in an X post. He shared a photo inside the locker room shaking the hand of Ovechkin. “The biggest game on Earth, honored to be with them in this record that binds the night … 894 goals #legends @nhl.”

Ovechkin is a goal remotely from Gretzky’s passage – an opportunity he had on Friday evening, but refused to exploit.

“He wants to beat the record with a goalkeeper in the fold, who I appreciate,” said the head of coach Spencer Cavalry. “He told me that on the bench, and I just wanted to confirm that he did not want to go out. And it’s difficult for us as coaches, because I just wanted to insure me at that moment: triple, at home. And he didn’t want to go out and score on an empty net to beat the record.”

He added: “There are six games left and wants to beat the record and have that moment when he is shooting over a goalkeeper on the disc”.
