“The way the season started, from the way we are able to fight and get to the position we did, to have that moment of reflection at that moment … everyone hurts after what has just happened. It was a rather special moment,” said Newcombe.

It is on the brand for Newcombe, a former carpenter from Poowong’s apprentice in the south of Gippsland and the best and most right of Hawthorn 2024, to focus on the bottom line of the Sausage Team, rather than the shoresman, like the legendary legendary coaching of Bullowthorn Foul that likes to say.

So, while some inside the hawthorn were not very happy that Ginnivan had made his impertinent Instagram posts “See U in 14 days” to Brodie Grundy – seen externally as a dissolution for the port – Newcombe did not think for their performance in the relevant night.

“No, I don’t think so,” he said.

“If you need an additional motivation, I think, from external things – and that’s okay if that’s how you want to do it – but I don’t think it has influenced us in any way, in terms of performance and the way we played the game.”

Newcombe faces a greater responsibility – once again – following the navicular bone injury to his talented teammate Will Day that Hawks claim that he will question the emerging gun for 3-4 months.

Newcombe, however, does not provide for its role of changing a lot, nor feeling a greater weight in the absence of a day, which also happened at the end of last season, when Day had a problem with the same foot and lost the end.

“He was rather disappointing for Will – For him to have the beginning of the season he made for us he was exciting for him, exciting for us, exciting for everyone. So they are contrasting emotions, of course, with that,” said Newcombe.

“But (certainly) he does not put pressure on me, (any) has added a pressure on me. We have three or four guys who are more than able to play the level of the role required, and I have full confidence in those who surround me to do the job, and (I can’t wait to go to battle with them for the next time period … up to Dayy’s Back.

“I was a little surprised (for injury a day) … (it was) certainly a surprise, not one that we wanted, but unfortunately, is part of the game we have to face with.”

Newcombe said there would be “some minor movement parts” because of the absence of the day.

“There are always adjustments made … but no, no direct impact on me.”

Newcombe agreed with my suggestion that the Hawks are not excessively dependent on the stars and that their strength resided in a democratic diffusion of capable players.

The insurgents in 2024, this year’s hawks are becoming a scalp for the opposition and will be driven out accordingly.

“I think we have been like this since the beginning of the season, anyway,” said Newcombe.

“The sides are putting the job to make life really hard for us, and so far in the first part of the season, we have been able to resist this, and we have certainly not silenced some extraordinary performances on the scoreboard, but we were able to return home with a victory every week.”

Newcombe said that Hawthorn’s style of play under Sam Mithchell did not move much, despite the arrival of the high defenders Josh Battle and Tom Barrass from St Kilda and West Coast.

“Seeing them have the impact that have a smile on my face and brings joy to many game groups, and also fans,” said Newcombe, adding that the Hawks were “certainly” improved last year, even if it was not in a specific area.

“I think we were quite dangerous, however, in the front half this year, obtaining many scores from many different guys, which was really good,” he said.

“(We were strongly defensively to start the year, which was also pleasant. There has been a midfield race most of the time.

“So I wouldn’t say that no areas of earth is particularly flourishing right now. I think we have only been more efficient, certainly everywhere.”

While the AFL is preparing for the Devils of Tasmania and the 18 clubs existing for an invitation of the draft, it is worth noting the opinion of Newcombe that there are others of its genre-such as his former Senior coach, was torn from Box Hill (mid-season project) after having lost more drafts-the VFL and in the second level championships.

“Through the VFL, however, there are many guys who, if given the opportunity, I think we would be able to perform at the AFL level, if things fall in line for them … the guys who come out of that system have been able to keep their own very quickly.”

Nothing more than Jai Newcombe. This period, under Sam Mitchell, was a good time to be in Hawthorn. “Certainly it is.”
