Iconic 1973 JPR Williams Shirt Rugby sells for £ 27k

A rugby shirt worn by the legend of the deceased Wales JPR Williams in what is considered one of the largest sports games that was auctioned for £ 27,500.

The shirt was worn in the 1973 barbarian match against the All Blacks, in which Williams was decisive in the famous victory of 23-11.

The full -back of Wales and Lions, who died in January 2024 at the age of 74, was an icon of the warning domain of the 70s, winning three five nations.

The Rogers Jones and Co bands described it as “a revolutionary player who changed the way the shoulders played the beautiful game”.

The shirt was worn by Williams in the 1973 device – during which Sir Gareth Edwards marked one of the most memorable attempts in history.

He was part of a collection of articles sold on auction on Thursday.

It was a “sale of white gloves”, which means that all the articles were successfully sold, and the auctioneer Ben Rogers Jones said that it was “a special honor and a privilege” to coordinate.

“Jpr Williams was one of my heroes, as it was for many others,” he said.

“There was an interest from all the rugby that played in the nations and we are pleased to have reached some fantastic prices”.

Rogers Jones added that, while Edwards attempt was well documented, “sometimes it is neglected that JPR has marked the crucial attempt to conquer the game for Baa-Baas”, making the shirt “an important element of sports memorabilia”.

“We were so happy that, at the auction, JPR’s performance was not neglected that the price went up to £ 27,500 with a bidder on the phone in London by winning the first prize,” he said.

The collection sold to a global audience, with buyers in Australia, Switzerland and France, as well as Wales and throughout the United Kingdom.
