Is this stopping you from buying an electric vehicle?

The lack of reliable charging stations and incoherent policies are preventing more Australians from buying EV and, says the financial industry, all levels of government must speed up the launch of charger.

EVs represented about 10 % of the vehicles purchased in Australia last year, but sales began to slow down. The operator of the Australian energy market (Aemo) in August reduced his expectations for the return of EV one third in the next decade.

Diane Tate, CEO of the Australian Finance Industry Association, said that buyers were far away due to the lack of uniform charging standards and inconsistent incentives and taxes. He mentioned the search for Deloitte, commissioned by Afia, who examined the road blocks to the Australians who purchased EV and the role of the financial industry in the transition to sustainable transport.

“I just got back from Norway and have passed very quickly to EV and Hybrid – there are very few petrol cars on the road,” he said.

“A petrol station will have, for example, about three petrol bowser and 20 charging stations, and all the charging stations are interoperable. So there is no no, ‘Oh my God, will it work for my car? What does my car have? What does it need?’ It is available, reliable and easy.

And these are the three things we need from the accusation of infrastructure in Australia. “

Tate said that its members financed about 6.2 billion dollars in loans for electric and hybrid vehicles last year, compared to $ 2.5 billion in 2023. And those numbers could be higher if the national leadership on policy and implementation of the infrastructures gave Australians the security of buying EV.

Policies aimed at electric vehicles vary substantially in Australia. The Australian Capital Territory exends EV buyers from the stamp duty and has a free registration. The exemption of the new South Wales on EV EVs expired in December 2023.
