John Cominsky, an NFL defensive clock who played for the Atlanta Falcons and Detroit Lions, announced his retreat from the League at only 29 years.

“After 6 years in the NFL, I am officially retired from a medical point of view,” he wrote in a declaration published on his Instagram. “I am proud of the career I have had, but I have accumulated a combination of accidents that are crushing my desire to continue playing.

“Thanks to the Atlanta Falcons for believing in me and having drawn up a perspective under the DII radar. Thanks to the Detroit Lions for taking the exemptions and giving me a second contract and allowing me to show what I can do as a start of NFL. Qbs?”

Cominsky added that he “learned a lot” playing football and was grateful for having had the opportunity to share the field with the players who admired as a young athlete and tightening his hand with Hall of Famers.

The Falcons selected Cominsky in the fourth round of the NFL Draft 2019 from the University of Charleston in western Virginia.

He played in 27 games for the Falcons before appearing in 30 with the Lions in 2022 and 2023. He suffered an MCL torn in the summer before the 2024 season and lost the entire season.
