The Chargers won the struggle for the signature of Petaia, with the leaders of Kansas City, Cleveland Browns and Atlanta Falcons among other clubs that were interested in the Australians.
Petaia had played for the Queensland Reds since 2018 and gained 31 wallabies caps as a return of utility, and was signed by the chargers as a narrow ending – a hybrid between a receiver and an offensive clock.
The Petaia agent, Andrew Fairbarn, said it was a huge victory for his client, who made a bet for collapsing the NFL after his rugby Australia contract expired at the end of 2024.
“We are enthusiastic about Jordy, who has quietly planned this NFL move for some time,” said Fairbarn. “He took a huge risk of leaving a rugby union for the NFL IPP, without a contractual guarantee.
“After talking to some teams from the Pro Day last week, we heard that the Chargers adapted better to him while he does his first step in the NFL.”
