Letile Tebogo: the 200m Olympic champion “would probably be criminal” without sport
Given his childhood experiences, Tebogo is now on a mission to use the transformative power of sport to inspire the next generation in collaboration with World Athletics.
He has been appointed ambassador for the athletics program of the children of the government body, who aims to encourage children to be more active.
“Athletics gave me so many opportunities and I want young people to believe in themselves, dream big and enjoy sport,” he said.
“Basically it shows them the direction, because if we have a lot of free time, we tend to do illegal things.
“We start to rob, do drugs and everything else.”
The Tabogo talents were well known throughout the continent before having recorded a new African record over 200 but Paris 2024, becoming the first Olympic gold medal ever of Botswana.
The world president of Athletics Lord Lord Sebastian Coe believes that Tebogo’s personal qualities are as precious as a role model.
“When a talent like Letile emerges, it shows other young talented athletes to the path,” said Lord Coe.
“Letile is confident, determined and humble and is already inspiring an entire generation of potential athletes and children.”
Tebogo has returned to one of his old training lands, Mma Masire Grounds, on Wednesday taking part in a relay challenge with over 1,000 children.
“I always pass here after training,” he explained.
“I go to the flashbacks that I came from here and now I am a global star.
“You just have to capitalize on the little you have and make sure you pursue your goals.”
