Like Oilers’ Corey Perry, he remains a key player of Roster A (almost) 40 years old

The wing of Edmonton Oilers Corey Perry performs 40 weeks. His most recent goal, n. 16 of the year, arrived last week compared to Dallas’s stars. His last fight arrived at the end of February, when he took Aj Greer (6 feet-3, 209 pounds) of the Florida Panthers. His games for 82 total in 20 NHL seasons are 26 goals and 55 points.

We are talking about a true talent of the Hall of Fame.

One of the pleasant things to look at the local team (in this case, the Oilers) are the veterane acquisitions that are still playing at a high level. I saw Perry for two decades and I thought I knew that everything had to know about his game before he arrived in Edmonton.

This season has been a revelation. Here are six things about Perry that I have learned or re-appreciated on him since he joined the Oilers.

Anticipation

Several times this winter, Perry’s invisible moments in an area where the disc has not yet arrived has offered opportunities for Edmonton. When he looked at him play two or three times a year for most of his career, it was easy to neglect how many possibilities creates by correctly reading a comedy. This is despite being older and has less pure speed.

The anticipation can be linked to the experience and Perry has seen each centimeter of NHL ice thousand times. It is incredible to see him guess so often; His knowledge of the game gives him an advantage.

Creativity

Perry’s work in the offensive area is exceptional. It makes games with and without its stick, using all available means to retain the opponents and send records in good seats. Several times during his 110 playoffs of the normal season and 19, Perry has “based” the disc with its skates and made a passage in an unorthodox but effective way.

It is also an impressive marker, using all available elements (including Flying nachos) to his advantage.

Goal score

Perry has been on both functionality and deep lines this season. His strength comes in being productive in both situations.

In just over 200 minutes with Leon Draisaitl, Perry scored 1.17 goals for 60. It is an excellent production. He is playing in that role because other wings have not been able to deliver.

At the other end of the depth graph, he scored 0.89 goals for 60 in just over 200 minutes with Derek Ryan.

The NHL does not have a “Goal-Screer utility” category, but perhaps there should be one. Perry’s 2024-25 season would be important in that list in 2024-25.

Fearless

Perry is an older man in the game of a young man, but he is not shy when it comes to playing physical. Recently Saturday evening, the veteran went into the middle of A Brouhaha With the Calgary Flames striker Mikael Backlund.

This edition of the Oilers is often criticized to be too passive and be bullied by the opponents. It is a right criticism. However, fans cannot say it on Perry’s report, as it is a fighter arranged with more combat majors at 39 years old.

Duration

One of the keys for any organization is to have players who are healthy enough to play throughout the season. Perry introduces himself to work every day and if he is not in training, the injury is not a factor.

In a season in which many Edmonton strikers spent time in the list of injuries, Perry’s record record (he played 72 games out of 73) is exceptional.

Beyond reasonable

In August, I include individual and team numbers for all Oilers players next season. Last summer, there was still a lot of movement of roster to come, but I managed a reasonable version of what Perry would have delivered.

I projected Perry as a depth forward, suggesting 50 games with six goals and 14 points. This is a reasonable production for a wing that is unlikely playing with Draisaitl or Connor McDavid, and it will probably be a healthy scratch in a coherent way.

In fact, Perry played in 72 games this season, losing only one. His 16 goals and 25 points mean that he is scoring at a much higher rate (0.35 points per game) for Edmonton.

Among the first things to go when the age kicks in the Surround offensive ability. Score instinct, fast hands, powerful shot. Perry marks closely (mainly) and uses a sixth sense to discover great score opportunities.

This type of ability should vanish over time, but will be 40 years old in a few weeks.

In conclusion

The Oilers of August could boast of the possibility of eight strong wings, two for each of the four lines.

The hypothesis was Ryan Nugent-Hopkins and Zach Hyman for the McDavid line; New arrivals Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson for the Draisaitl trio; Some combination by Dylan Holloway, Evander Kane and Connor Brown for the third line with Adam Henrique; A fourth line by Perry and Ryan with Mattias Janmark or one of players depending on Kane/Brown who found chemistry with Henrique during the year.

Things began to reveal with St. Louis Blues offer sheets. GM Stan Bowman acquired Vasily Podkolzin to support the six central and worked, but there was still some oscillation on the right wing with veterans injuries.

Perry was money for the Oilers all year round in a role of utility offensively.

This look at his season focused on his impressive work of five out of five, but also publishes 5.00 points for 60 in 84 minutes effective Power-Play.

It is tempting to insert it on a depth line for the playoffs. Evander Kane and Trent Frederic will be the owners of points in training if they are healthy. Skinner and Arvidsson are gathering fit. Brown and Janmark are necessary for the killing of penalty.

You could argue that Perry sit for many playoffs this spring. Based on his performance and the ability to stay healthy, however, it is a poor bet.

At this point, it is sure to call Perry something between an outlier and a unicorn.
