Man City Women: What went wrong for the WSL side this season?

Any team without Vivianne Miedema, Khadija Shaw, Lauren Hemp and Alex Greenwood would have dropped their level.

The large list of City injuries, which includes those key players, has seriously influenced their campaign and questioned their lack of depth of the team.

Jill Roord, Aobo Fujino, Rebecca Knaak, Laura Coombs, Naomi Layzell and the custodian Ayaka Yamashita have also lost a significant number of games this season, since the city is currently in fourth place in the WSL, seven points at Manchester United drift in the last place in the Champions League with only four left matches.

“Some of those (injured) players would have entered any WSL team,” said the former captain of the city and England Steph Houghton at BBC Due.

“If you remove Shaw, Miedema and Greenwood, this is a backbone of expert players and also good quality players.

“Do you have a twenty year old in Gracie Prior who has arrived through the Academy and played many games recently. Should it be in the team?

“This does not depend on individual performance, but in the end we are trying to build a team to go to win trophies.

“We miss some key players. This has shown the difference. Without a doubt, the force in depth is not there and it is something we have to face.”
