Masters 2025: Lourie Canter of the Enghilter

Canter played the seasons of 2022 and 2023 in the Liv tour, but he lost a Putt in the qualifying event of the escape circuit for the 2024 season. From there, English needed to reconstruct his career in the world tour DP.
Initially his exemption options appeared limited, but he played quite well to continue starting before obtaining his first victory at the European Open in June last year.
He won again in Bahrein in February and was then classified at South African Open. Suddenly he was a top 50 player and became the first golfist who had played Liv to compete in the Pga Tour in the players’ championship in Sawgrass last month.
Now he is trying to deal with the most glamorous tournament of the game here in Georgia.
“I saw the course on Sunday,” said Canter.
“That, with Monday who is a Labout, it was fantastic to have that experience because it seems that it is a golf course that you cannot play enough.
“You have to take everything as quickly as possible. Learn the golf course and then try to apply it and go out and treat it like any other week, even if we know it is not … it is nothing more than.”
This is the reason why Canter brought his family for what is probably the biggest week of his career to date.
“I remember the first time I opened,” he remembered. “I was an amateur in 2010 and was in St Andrews. I entered with that mentality of treating it like any other tournament and thinking, I played many golf connections.
“And I had a really difficult week. It went very quickly and I lost cutting on Friday and I remember thinking that I didn’t even have fun.
“Since then, every time I have had the opportunity to play great tournaments, I just try to reflect on what will be a success for me at the end of the week.
“And however trivial as it seems, reflect on why we are playing is trying to enter tournaments like this, and on the people who have who helped me get there.
“All the people I am doing for now, I want them here, to try to have fun and see me do it and I hope to play well.”
Canter can’t wait to play on Wednesday’s Par 3 competition with his family in tow. So it will be the serious stuff when it unleashes 15.59 BST together with the 2009 champion Angel Cabrera and Adam Schenk.
Cabrera has been here for the first time since 2019 after having served a prison sentence of 30 months after being sentenced for domestic violence.
“It was one of my favorite golfers, I absolutely liked to see him play,” said Canter.
“Obviously he is returning from being in prison. I guess from the tournament it is a perspective, he is back and wants to play and represent Argentina and is in good shape.
“I will hold my hand on the first day and probably have fun seeing him play.”
The sun shone for the Tuesday test round of Tuesday of Canter, who was in the company of the stars of the Ryder Cup Tyrrell Hatton and Shane Lowry.
The debutant said he could hear both players who complain that fell in areas who knew they should have been avoided in Augusta National. Canter is fully aware of the importance of precision iron game this week.
“It will be the first time that I will play for that pivot or that shot,” he said. “As far as possible I have to embrace him.
“I saw the ball behave for the most part this year, so I will only try to expand and give me the best chances of hoping to put some scores together.”
