NCAA Woman of the Year, a family among those killed in the New York aerial crash

The authorities released the identities of the six people tragically killed in a New York plane crash Saturday, including a former student athlete.
The six victims, most of whom were connected, died at 12:15 on Saturday, according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The plane, a Mitsubishi MU-2B, He was traveling to the County Airport of Columbia in Hudson, New York, When he crashed into an open and muddy field in Copake, about ten miles south.
Karenna Groff, a former footballer of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) who was appointed NCAA Woman of the Year in 2022, was one of the deceased, as well as both his parents, Dr. Michael Groff and Dr. Joy Saini. At the time Groff had studied medicine at New York University.
Even his brother, Jared Groff, and his partner, Alexia Couyutas Duarte, were killed during the flight. Karenna Groff’s boyfriend, James Santoro, was aboard the flight and also died.

The six had risen to the plane of Westchester County Airport in White Plains that morning. Shortly before the accident, the pilot had radiodile in the control of air traffic at the County Columbia airport to say that he had lost the initial approach and had requested a new approach plan.
The air traffic controllers have prepared new coordinates and attempted to send a low altitude notice three times to the pilot, which has not responded.
The authorities are still investigating the cause of the accident, which may take 24 months to be completed.

The plane, which was a private plane owned by Michael Groff, was discovered “compressed, connected and incorporated into the ground” of the muddy field, said the NTSB Todd Inman officer in a Sunday briefing.
Inman also said that the authorities obtained video flight, that he seemed to demonstrate that the plane was intact “and crashed at a high drop in the ground”.

The NTSB also said that the plane had a recently updated pilot cabin with a new FAA certified technology and that the pilot was flying according to the flight rules of the instrument rather than the visual flight rules.
James’ father John Santoro, expressed pain for the tragedy and described the Groff as a “wonderful family” at the Associated Press.
