Netanyahu appoints the new Israeli spy garment despite the surrender with the court

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel has appointed a new head of the domestic intelligence service on Monday, bringing his government closer to a surrender with the Supreme Court, which temporarily suspended the dismissal of the current head of the light at the beginning of this month.

Mr. Netanyahu’s office announced that Eli Sharvit, former head of the navy, would have succeeded Ronen Bar, the current head of the bet Shin, the Israeli national espionage agency. Mr. Netanyahu’s cabinet decided at the beginning of March that Mr. Bar would be fired soon by his assignment, as soon as a successor was installed.

On Monday the prime minister’s move avoided a constitutional crisis. The officials clarified that the installation of Sharvit in the role would have been delayed until the Supreme Court will keep an audition on April 8 on the legality of the dismissal of the Signor Bar.

But the episode has already intensified the fears among the critics of Mr. Netanyahu who is trying to expand his power beyond the constitutional rules.

The critics of Mr. Netanyahu accused him of having fired Mr. Bar for investigating the Prime Minister’s assistants, accused of having traveled state secrets to a foreign newspaper and of having worked for people connected to a foreign government.

Netanyahu said Mr. Bar was fired due to a breakdown of trust between the two men. Mr. Netanyahu’s office also blamed Mr. Bar for the calibers early on the morning of October 7, 2023, which allowed Hamas to launch his attack on Israel that day and turn on the war in Gaza.

The dismissal of Mr. Bar has arrived in the midst of a wider effort from Mr. Netanyahu to reduce the influence of state guard dogs.

Last week, the Coalition of Government of Israel approved a law in Parliament which offers politicians greater control over the selection of the judges of the Supreme Court. And, at the beginning of March, the cabinet began the process of dismissal of the best lawyer of the government, Gali Baharav-Ciara, who made Mr. Netanyahu angry questioning the legality of government decisions and overcoming them.
