Excessively almost four decades, St Johnstone turned under the property of Geoff Brown.

Davidson says that the businessman and his son Steve, who succeeded his father as president, “were incredible for me and St Johnstone”.

He suggests “there was a nucleus of 13, 14, 15 players” and who only needed to add three or four every season to ensure continuity.

“They were not the most paid club and we wouldn’t have had the ball and played at 30 steps, but everyone bought what was successful and what it meant for people,” said Davidson.

“Towards the end of my career, it wasn’t happening. You were entering, there were two or three of us, there were people who arrived who did not know the championship, they didn’t know what the club was.”

Having announced in December 2022 that he was selling the club, it was not until 2024 that the American businessman Adam Webb took over from Geoff Brown.

There will inevitably be a period of uncertainty in the following 18 months – and uncertainty rarely creates an environment in favor of success.

“The last eight, nine, 10 windows, they had to panic to buy,” adds Davidson.

Now a fan of St Johnstone looking inside, the legend of the club hopes to be able to return to the stability and success of the past not too far away.

With relatively new owners at the helm and with a manager who wants to try to play in the right way, the future could still be bright for the McDiarmid Park Club.

However, much of this may depend on the fact that Valakari and its players can produce an act of survival of Houdini -style premiership in the coming weeks.
