More than two decades have passed since Recep Tayyip Erdoğan became president of Türkiye. Over the years, Erdoğan’s regime has become increasingly authoritarian, eroding the freedoms of the press and removing the controls to its power. But mass protests broke out in the last week. By paying in the streets of Istanbul, thousands of people have challenged the warnings of the government and a repression by the anti -isposus police to make sure that their voices are listened to.
Today in the producer focus Sami Kent, who wrote a book on the history of Türkiye, speaks Michael Safi on the background of the protests. Erdoğan implemented the remaining political rival to his power: the mayor of Istanbul, Ekrem İMamoğlu. The two men share a similar background and, explains Kent, were both seen as modernizing that offer new views. Erdoğan was also mayor of Istanbul and was also imprisoned – leaving a political hero out of prison. Now it seems that the story is repeating.

Next to the supporters of the IMAMUEL party, the CHP, has found many young people who grew up under Erdoğan and now want a dramatic change. For them, he says that protests do not concern a man but “our future in this country. It concerns democracy”. And for them, he says “there is a true sense of joy, potential with these protests and a true sense of momentum”.
