The first 20 male and female players ask Grand Slam for multiple cash prizes

The money -prize at the Wimbledon last year was £ 50 million, exactly twice the amount offered in 2014. In that period of 10 years, the cash prize for the losers of the first round increased from £ 27,000 to £ 60,000.

But players have often indicated the vast revenues generated by the Grand Slam and feel they deserve a significantly bigger return.

In the year until July 2023, the All England Club (Aeltc) had a turnover of £ 380 million. But once the management costs of the championships have been deducted, the operational profit was less than £ 54 million.

Almost £ 49 million went to the LTA, since Aeltc accepted to pay the government body 90% of its annual surplus until 2053.

Costs include cash prizes, using over 8,000 seasonal employees, preparing and developing the site and supporting other grass events.

The Olympic champion Zheng Qinwen has declared that an increase in the cash prize would be particularly welcomed by the lower level players, who may have difficulty making ends meet other times of the year.

“I think it will benefit all players, not just the best players, in particular those who work hard during the year and must be paid by the Grand Slam and have to survive,” added the number eight of the Chinese world.

“We try to do what we can, and then let’s see what the gods bring us. But at least we are trying.”
