The tutoring program of small groups helps students reach reading skills

In the NSW, 29.4 percent of the 7th year students did not manage to satisfy the basic competence standards in reading, they showed the results of Naplan last year. About 10 % of the cohort in the new South Wales is classified as “it needs additional support”.

Trisha Jha, the Center for Research on Education for Independent Studies, which studied tutoring programs of small groups, said that the entire class interventions by a teacher have a better quality-price ratio.
“It is an idea that seems wonderful. When we are looking at the limited resources we have, it is very difficult to claim that it will be a good bet,” he said.

However, he said that the tutoring of the small group of NSW has had the potential to be successful if implemented correctly with the non -teachers used to perform it.
“The research shows if you use a high quality and scripted program, you can have the teacher in class and you are not sacrificing the quality of the teaching that is happening in the tutoring,” he said.
The Chifley College Shalvey campus has taken on university students like Darlene Guillermo to do the tutoring. The principal Jenny Linklater said that employing university students for tutoring had the additional advantage of attracting staff.
“This is helping us to respond to the lack of teachers in this school,” said Linklater.
