Tommy Freeman: Northampton must “correct some wrong”, says England

Rugby Director Phil Dowson said that Northampton needs to look back “forensic” at Leicester’s game to evaluate exactly because that performance took place.

“There is a lot of context around it,” Northampton told BBC Radio.

“We are a game group, with a style of play, which requires a high level of connection and cohesion and we had nothing of this – I think nine of the group had not trained together because of the duty and international injuries, and we seemed particularly rusty.

“At the same time, we seemed very stressed and worried about what we were trying to do and this led to so many unusual errors in terms of execution of the skills and we must squeeze what we are trying to do and make sure to get our game on the field because we don’t want it to be a reflection of us.”

Dowson accepted that many supporters of the saints were not satisfied with the way of their defeat by Leicester.

“They are not just supporters for whom it is difficult,” he added. “It is a stain on all our records, a stain on my reputation and the reputation of the players and it is my responsibility to make sure that this does not happen again because it is not acceptable.

“I appreciate that fans are angry, but they cannot be angry than a coaching group that is so emotionally invested and a game group that kills the week in, week to perform for the club.”
