The need to remove Xpt trains from the service to allow them to be updated will involve two of the six daily rail services between Sydney and Grafton who are replaced with the coaches at the end of the month for about a year.
The CEO of the NSW Trainlink Roger Weeks declared at the hearing that the replacement coach services would allow to speed up the update of the XPT fleet, but it observed that the latter would not have increased the train capacity.
“The program of extension of life (for the XPT fleet) will not give us any additional capacity, so we are not getting set of extra trains,” he said. “We have no ability to increase the number of XPT services we are performing.”
Questioned on the increase in railway services for the casino and other parts of the northern rivers, Aitchison said that it was difficult to wear more railway services when the existing Xpt fleet was able and needed significant work. “The problem of stocks is difficult,” he said.
